Sanchez -- Alberto F."Bert" Sanchez, Jr, age 89, died Monday, March 24, in Amarillo, Texas. He was born in his grandparents home on July 30, 1914 in Clayton, New Mexico to Alberto F. Sanchez, Sr. and Natividad (Romero) Sanchez. A lifetime resident of Union County, Alberto attended school in the western Union County community of Barney until the sixth grade when he transferred to Clayton. He graduated from Clayton High School in 1932 and managed a ranch and store for his uncle Tobias Sanchez. On May 1, 1934 he married Adelina A. (Garcia) Sanchez in Clayton and she preceded him in death on December 31, 1980. Alberto owned and operated Robinett's Grocery store and a Texaco gas station for several years. He also worked for the State of New Mexico's Motor Transportation Department where he retired as a supervisor for the Clayton Port of Entry. Bert was not only a hard worker, but he served his community well. He held two publically elected offices serving on the Clayton Municipal School District Board as well as being a council member for the Town of Clayton. He belonged to several civic organizations having been a member of the Clayton's Lion Club for over 35 years. He was also a member of the Coronado Club, Knights of Columbus and St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. He was a board member of the Retired Public Employees of New Mexico and former President of the NM Senior Coalition. He was a lifetime member on the advisory board for the Eastern New Mexico Area on Aging, A position he was appointed to by then Governor Gary Carruthers. Alberto was a member of the Union County Medical Board and former Chairman of the Union County Home Health Care Agency. Bert was chairman of the Salvation Army's Project Unite which helped low income elders pay utility bills. He was also a member of the Union County Historical Society and in 1995 he received the Distinguished Pioneer Award from the Clayton Union County Chamber of Commerce. In addition to his wife and parents, Albert was also preceded in death by an infant son, Alberto F. Sanchez, III; two brothers, Malaquias Sanchez and Alfredo Felix Sanchez; and by two sisters, Carlota Sanchez and Anita Park Sanchez. Alberto is survived by two sons, Ricardo T. Sanchez and his wife, Phyllis of El Paso, Texas and Reinaldo G. Sanchez and his wife, Sally of Clayton, New Mexico, 1 daughter, Lydia F. Bolk and her husband, Bill of Amarillo, Texas; one sister, Veronica Martinez of Albuquerque; nine grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. A Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, March 27, and Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, March 28, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Clayton with Fr. James Vance, officiating. Burial will be in the Clayton Memorial Cemetery by Hass Funeral Directors of Clayton. The family suggests that memorials be made to the Clayton Senior Citizens Center, 19 E. Broadway, Clayton, New Mexico 88415.
