Steel -- Joan Conway Steel, 77, a resident of Albuquerque since 1975, died Monday, March 31, 2003. She is survived by her son, Robert Steel and wife, Barbara of Santa Rosa, CA; daughters, Kathleen Steel of Riverside, CA and Patty Steel Rotonda and husband, Michael of Tijeras, NM; grandchildren, Jeff Steel, Nikki Steel Byrne and husband, Shawn, Lauren Rotonda, Jason Rotonda, Becca Saucedo; and great-granddaughter, Brianna Steel. She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Richard Steel in September 1991 and son, Richard Steel in 1974. Mrs. Steel was born in Greensburg, PA on April 1, 1925 to John R. and Margaret Conway Jones. She and her future husband, Dick, were high school sweethearts and they were married in 1941. He served in the Army Air Corps, United States Air Force and the United States Army and she and their children accompanied him on his many transfers. She kept in contact with their many friends they made all over the world. Upon retirement in Albuquerque, Joan was active in the Retired Officers Association Auxiliary at Kirtland, the Military Widows Association and St. Bernadette Catholic Church. She was also active in loving and raising her grandchildren. Joan was a great friend, a loving mom and adoring grandmother and will be missed by all who knew her. Rosary will be recited Thursday, April 3, 2003, 7:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel. Friends may visit French Mortuary, Thursday, April 3, 2003, 6:00 p.m. until time of rosary. Mass will be celebrated Friday, April 4, 2003, 9:00 a.m., at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, 11401 Indian School Rd. NE. Interment will take place at 3:00 p.m., at Santa Fe National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Vista Care Sandia Hospice Pavilion, 601 Martin Luther King Blvd. NE, 87102.
