Smith -- Sarah I. Smith, US Army Retired, 88, a resident of Albuquerque, NM since 1989, died Thursday, July 17, 2003. She is survived by two half-sisters, Stella Butler of Jacksonville, NC and Carla McElhaney of Cincinnati, OH; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. Sarah was born to Carl W. and Josie (Hatt) Smith on November 22, 1914 in Machias, Maine. After graduating from Washington State Normal School in 1934, she taught school for eight years. Sarah left teaching in January 1943 to enlist in the Woman's Auxiliary Army Corps, which later became the Woman's Army Corps. She retired after 20 years of active duty in 1963, making her home in San Francisco, CA and working as a Federal Civil Service employee. After the October 1989 earthquake, she moved to Albuquerque to live near her niece, Nancy J. Lane. Graveside services will be held Tuesday, July 22, 2003, at 2:30 p.m., at Santa Fe National Cemetery, Santa Fe, NM. Friends may visit French Mortuary, Wyoming Blvd. Chapel, Tuesday, July 22, 2003, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Women in Military Service Memorial Foundation, Inc., Dept. 560, Washington, D.C., 20012-0560.
