OWENSBY, FRED H. age 91, of Albuquerque, NM passed away on Tuesday January 27th at his home in Albuquerque surrounded by his children. He was born on August 22, 1923 in Koehler, NM, to the late Fred T. and Dulce Bowles Owensby. Fred graduated from Raton High School in 1941 and attended the University of New Mexico on a football scholarship. He left UNM to join the United States Marine Corps and served from 1943 to 1946. He married his high school sweetheart Jane Morrow in April, 1945, and they were married for 55 years until her passing in September, 2000. After being honorably discharged from the USMC, he returned to the family ranch. In addition to ranching, he worked as a livestock inspector and in 1966 was appointed Assistant Director of the New Mexico Livestock Board, which took him and his family to Albuquerque. In 1975, Fred and his family returned to the family ranch where he remained until the last several years of his life, when he moved back to Albuquerque. Fred played the trumpet and enjoyed playing in Pete Caldarelli's dance band, as well as in local musical productions at the Shuler Theater and at Easter sunrise services at Capulin Volcano. He loved his life as a rancher and spending time with his family. Fred is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Jane; sons: Morrow and Patrick Owensby; sisters: Helen Walton, Sylvia Yardis, and Freida Giacomo; father and mother-in-law Raymond and Melba Morrow. He is survived by his daughters: Susan McCarthy (Pat) of Albuquerque, Sally Lemons (Mike), of Raton; sons: Stewart Owensby (Sue) of the Raymond Morrow Ranch, Craig Owensby (Jane) of Peralta, NM, daughter-in-law Mary Alice Owensby of the Owensby Ranch, and brother Guy Owensby (Pat) of Severna Park, Maryland. Fred is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandaughter, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and many friends. In lieu opf flowers the family requests that donations be made to one of the following charities: Wounded Warriors Project, Make-a-Wish Foundation, Kidney Foundation, or a charity of your choice. A public viewing will be held on Thursday, February 5th from 5 pm to 7 pm in the chapel of the Alderette-Pomeroy Funeral Home. The funeral service will be Friday, February 6th at 10 am at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. Immediately following the service a reception will be held at the Raton Elks Lodge. A private family burial will take place at the Raymond Morrow Ranch. Arrangements for Fred Owensby are un the care and direction of the Alderette-Pomeroy Funeral Home of Raton.
