MARTINEZ, HELEN M. Helen Marie West - Martinez Age 91, passed away September 10, 2014. She was preceded in death by her husband, George in 1996 after 54 years of marriage and her son George Lee in 2010. She is survived by her son Robert Asa and wife Sharon Morrison Martinez; grandchildren, Courtney and husband Bret Wentworth; Travis and wife Teresa Martinez; Alyson and husband Richard McDonald; Jessica Martinez; four great-grandchildren Asa and Shayden Wentworth, Rocco and Lily Martinez; sisters-in-law Jean McLaughlin; Margarite Arellano; Cora Archuleta. Helen was born on March 23, 1923 in Cimarron, NM to Asa and Maude West, who had moved to New Mexico from West Virginia in 1916. Mr. West and family owned two small grocery stores, one in Cimarron and one in French, NM, which later moved to Springer, NM. Helen met her husband George in French. George and Helen were married May 7, 1941 while George was in the U.S. Army Air Corps, stationed at Lowry Field in Denver. He later served overseas in the Pacific while Helen raised Robert with her parents in Springer. When George returned home from the service, they moved to Albuquerque where George Lee was born. They owned and operated the "Park Avenue Cleaners" for many years. Helen also worked for Jill's Bakery while her boys were growing up; later worked for Mary Kay for 25 years. They were very proud of their small rural home in the north valley. George and Helen were very involved in the Republican Party. George worked for Governor Edwin Mechem and later senator Mechem; George was also republican state vice chairman with Helen always by his side. They attended several national conventions and loved their involvement in politics. She was loved by everyone who met her. A Funeral Mass will be held Thursday, September 18, 2014 at 9:00 a.m. at the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, 9502 Fourth St NW, Albuquerque, NM.
