HAYES, JEAN MARIE BYRAM age 65 of Albuquerque, died peacefully August 22, 2014 after an extended illness. A resident of Albuquerque since 2009, she had lived most of her life in the Portland, Maine area. Born in Portland on August 9, 1949, she was raised in South Portland, Maine and attended schools there. A 1967 graduate of South Portland High School, she attended Westbrook Junior College in Portland before moving to Denver, Colorado to marry her husband, Michael (Mike) Hayes, in 1968. She and Mike lived several years in Colorado and Kansas while Mike served in the Air Force. During that time, Jean was employed as an insurance underwriter at USF & G and Turner Barker insurance agencies. In 1972 they returned to South Portland and started their family. Jean left her insurance career to become a full-time mother and home maker. Jean was a devoted mother to her two children, sewing most of their clothing herself when they were toddlers. She enjoyed sewing, macrame, and cooking. She loved hosting family in her home, particularly during the holidays. She and her husband retired to Albuquerque, New Mexico in 2009. She had been looking forward to becoming a grandmother in October. Jean was predeceased by her father, Emmett Byram; her son, Patrick; and her mother, Kathleen Hunter Byram. She is survived by her loving husband of 45 years, Michael Hayes; a daughter, Sarah Goke of Albuquerque, NM and her husband Christopher; a brother Robert Byram of South Portland, Maine; a sister Kathleen Brown of Manchester, NH; a sister Nadine Byram of Albuquerque; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. A Rosary will be recited at 8:15 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at St. Joseph on the Rio Grande, Albuquerque. Burial will be at Santa Fe National Cemetery. Online condolences for the family may be left at the Riverside Funeral Home website.
