HUGHES -- EDITH BLUST A resident of Albuquerque since 1951 passed away February 14, 2012. Edith was born September 30, 1923 in Holland Patent, NY, the daughter of the late George Blust and Clara Evans Blust. She was predeceased by her infant daughter Jennifer Beth Hughes; husband Orval D. Hughes; and her seven brothers and sisters: Margaret Chesbro, George Blust, Eunice Law, Charles Blust, Clarence Blust, Mary Williams and Jean Ruffrage. She is survived by her son David Hughes of Niskayuna, NY; son Bill Hughes and wife Sylvia; son Richard Hughes and wife Connie; daughter Peggy Miller, all of Albuquerque; and daughter Elizabeth Kasparian and husband Joel of Hacienda Heights, CA; 20 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and counting. Edith grew up on a farm in upstate NY and graduated from Holland Patent Central School in 1941 and the Excelsior School of Business. She worked in a bank in Holland Patent. She met Orval Hughes and they married September 17, 1943 while he was serving in the Navy during World War II. After the war the family resided in upstate New York where the first four children were born. In 1951 the Navy called Orval to active duty and the family moved to Sandia Base. During his two decade Navy career the Hughes family resided in six different states. Often Orval would be at sea for several months. Edith was left alone to run the family which now came to number five children. In addition to her vital family leadership Edith became actively involved in community services including Cub Scout Den Mother; Brownie Troop leader; school librarian Whittier and Mission elementary schools; south valley Meals on Wheels; community garden project for Laotian immigrants; and pet therapy at senior homes. Edith loved organic gardening. She was a prolific reader, an outstanding bridge player and enjoyed cross-stitching. Edith and Orval attended nearly every Lobo game since the Pit opened. Fans may remember Edith in her wheel chair with her Lobo "wolf" hat. Most of all Edith loved her family and excelled in her role as wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother and will be greatly missed. Edith will be interred with Orval this summer at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to your local library.
