SALAZAR -- IRENE SWARTZ died peacefully in her sleep on Christmas morning, ten days short of her ninety third birthday. She was preceded in death by her husband Carlos F. Salazar Jr. and her grandson Alan Rodriguez. She is survived by her five children, Carlos F. Salazar III and wife Julie; Zolla (Zoe) Rodriguez; Jim E. Salazar; Irene (ReNee) Lovato and husband Tony; Tom R. Salazar and wife Raphlita, grandchildren, Carlos F. Salazar IV, Monica Rodriguez; Jimmy E. Salazar; Eric Salazar; Gina Ortiz; Martina Ruiz; Vanessa Salazar; Cynthia Salazar, seven great-great grandchildren, two great-great-great grandchildren; three sisters, Gene Seagrave-Smith, Norma Kisman and Nancy Hackert. She was born in Dwyer, New Mexico on January 5, 1919, the eldest of nine children. She was very proud to have come from the pioneer family of Edward J. Swartz, who homesteaded in the Mimbres River Valley in 1891, in what became known as Swartz, NM. In 1977 she and her husband co-wrote a book about the Mimbres Valley, depicting her grandfather's life and the Mimbres Indian ruins found in the area. In 2003 she wrote a book which highlighted accomplishments and struggles in her life. Irene followed her grandfathers footsteps in politics and would not hesitate to give you her very conservative views. She loved gardening, oil painting, ceramics and canning fruits and vegetables. She had a wonderful sense of humor and a very generous heart. Visitation will be held at 6:00pm with a rosary to follow at 7:00pm on Wednesday December 28, 2011 at Salazar & Sons Mortuary. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00am on Thursday, December 29, 2011 at Our Lady of the Annunciation Catholic Church, 2610 Utah St, NE. Interment is to follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, 1900 Edith Blvd. NE. Pallbearers will be Carlos Rodriguez, Severino Borrego, George Schwartz, Rick Pargas, Eddie Torres and Monica Rodriguez.
