LEWIS -- HILLIARD H. JR. 85, Colonel USA Retired, died Thursday, October 20, 2011. Born in Roswell, NM, August 3, 1926, he lived there and in Albuquerque except for the time of his military career. He was a Husband, a Father, and a Soldier. He was the son of Hilliard and Margaret Lewis, and is survived by Carol, his wife of 62 years, three sons, H. H. III and wife, Debi of Juneau, Alaska; Grant and wife, Janet of Bloomsburg, IN, and Paul of La Cueva, NM; and by daughter, Janet and partner, Catherine of Laguna Beach, CA; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Also surviving are his brother, Claude and wife, Nancy and sister, Dorothy and husband, Norman Ribble, and a large extended family. At 17, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps Reserves, was called to duty and served one year at the end of World War II. He returned to attend and graduate from the University of New Mexico, was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the NM Army National Guard, was called to active duty at the outbreak of the Korean War. He received a regular army commission in 1953 and remained on active duty until retiring as a Colonel in 1979. At the time of his retirement in 1979, he was the Deputy Commander of Fort Bliss, Texas. He served a total of 36 years in Germany, Okinawa, Alaska, Vietnam, and in a number of stateside assignments. He was a Thirty-Third Degree Mason, a member of the Scottish Rite, York Rite, and the Shrine. He was a Past Master of Temple Lodge 6, and actively engaged in the activities of the Boy Scouts of America and the Association of the US Army. Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, October 25, 2011, 10:00 a.m., at French - University Chapel. Interment to follow at 12:45 p.m., at Santa Fe National Cemetery, Santa Fe, NM.
