DURAN -- EZEQUIEL,L "ZEKE" aka Walloper, born in Barelas on April 10, 1920, the third of five boys born to Jose and Sarah Duran, passed away on Wednesday September 7, 2011 in his home. As a young man Zeke had many talents, one as an athlete, a baseball player where he earned his nick name "Walloper" through high school and to this day. Zeke also served his country proudly. He enlisted in the US Army in 1941. Zeke was stationed in Iceland then the South Pacific earning him several medals, such as the American Theater Medal, European Medal and Asiatic Pacific Theater and Philippine Liberation Medal. During WWII Zeke was a radio operator and before leaving the service in 1945, Zeke married the love of his life Helen in 1944. After the service Zeke continued to serve his community. He performed countless humanitarian services also becoming one of the organizers of the American GI form in New Mexico. Zeke was a strong community leader, active in his church, and always looking to help others. Zeke and Helen began their own family shortly after they wed. He is survived by his wife Helen; children Martin and wife Terri, Robert, Cecilia and husband Jose, Victor and wife Debbie; his grandchildren, Marty Allen, Marvin, Jason, Eric and wife Kasi, Kevin and Aaron; great grandchildren, Chelsea, Devin, Teddee, Vanessa and Ezabella. He will be greatly missed. A rosary will be held on Sunday September 11, 2011 at 6:00 p.m., at Salazar & Sons Mortuary. A mass will be held Monday September 12, 2011 at 10:30 a.m., at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Interment is to follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
