PETERSON -- Ruth E. Peterson went peacefully to her Heavenly Father on Thursday January 6, 2011, the day before her 87th birthday, surrounded by her family. Born on January 7,1924 in Marshall County, West Virginia to Lewis E. and Nina B.Wayt, Ruth grew up in and around Moundsville. She graduated from Moundsville High School where she excelled in academics. She is preceded in death by her parents, and her only sibling, brother Arlo. She met and married the love of her life, Rodney F. Peterson, roller skating at Rock Creek Park in Washington DC where she was working for the Maritime Commission. They were married on May 11, 1947, Mother's Day. They moved to Middlebury, CT and together built their first home. Ruth was a member of the Middlebury Congregational Church. She exercised her sewing talent making choir robes for the Cherub Choir. She was involved in Girl Scouts, volunteering as Cookie Chairman and day camp counselor. She was an excellent cook winning blue ribbons at the county and state level for her apple pie. She could skin and prepare catfish and made the best macaroni and cheese you ever ate (from scratch). Lobster was another of her specialties, even though she didn't eat it herself. She was a lover of kitchen gadgets and had them all. Ruth and her family moved to Los Alamos in 1963 where she was employed by Los Alamos National Laboratory as an Executive Secretary until her retirement in 1984. She was never happier than when spending time with the grandkids, square dancing with the Mountain Mixers and the New Mexico Square Dance Association and travelling all of the continental United States with Rod in their motorhome. She was a whiz at crossword and word jumble puzzles and loved to read, watch Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Rodney; children Susan Byrd and husband Sidney of Belen, Linnea Peterson and husband, Al Munger of Santa Fe, Rodney F. Peterson II and Kris Mooney of Brooksville, FL and Cheryl Lucero and husband Ronald of Los Alamos; nine grandchildren, Jessica, Jenna, Andrew, Heidi, Erica, Jackie, Trevor, Elizabeth and Paul Ann; and three great-grandchildren. Private interment and memorial service will be at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. There will be a gathering for family and friends to celebrate her life Wednesday, January 12, 2011 in Santa Fe at 1:00 pm. Please call 505-660-5297 for directions.
