HOWERTON -- Walter B. Howerton lost his best friend when his wife Barbara died in 1998. On Christmas evening 2010 he joined her. Walter was born in McAlister, OK in 1920. He attended the University of Oklahoma. He and Barbara met while working at the State Capitol in Oklahoma City, and they married in 1943. Walter then joined the Army Signal Corps. In 1949 he and Barbara moved to Albuquerque, and he was hired by Sandia National Laboratories. He worked for Sandia until he retired in 1986. He traveled extensively in his job. They lived for a year in Las Vegas during nuclear testing at Mercury, Nevada, and he also traveled often to Kauai and Southeast Asia during the Viet Nam war. He specialized in calibration, and thoroughly enjoyed his work at Sandia. Walter loved working on his sports cars, and raced MG's during the late 1950's. He and Barbara both enjoyed playing duplicate bridge, and Walter was extremely close to becoming a "Life Master" when his memory wouldn't allow him to play anymore. Walter was very well liked, and was always a gentleman. He was a wonderful, kind and loving man, who will be greatly missed. He is survived by his daughter Shelby Majors and her husband Dick of Fort Collins, CO; and his sister Mary Elizabeth McDonald of Albuquerque. Cremation will take place, and no services are planned.
