UMBRAGE -- Anabel Tischhauser Umbrage passed away October 29, 2010. Anabel was born in Marble, Colorado on June 17, 1915. Her father worked for the railroad and Anabel lived in several small cities throughout the southwest before the family settled in Albuquerque, where Anabel met Jake Umbrage. Anabel married Jake on June 18, 1934. They had celebrated their 69th anniversary shortly before Jake's death on April 26, 2004. The two of them worked side by side for many years first in the grocery business and then in the real estate business. They even tried their hand at ranching and for several years divided their time between Albuquerque and Gunnison, Colorado where they ran a small cattle operation. On more than one occasion, Anabel drove an old De Soto over Monarch Pass in deep snow. The large 2 wheel drive car with no power steering was packed with provisions and children but no cell phone. She sewed, washed and ironed clothes for her husband and eight children, attended sporting events, school plays, Boy Scout and Brownie meetings, the PTA and made the occasional trip to the principal's office. She served as president of the Saint Mary's PTA, and Altar Society at Immaculate Conception Parish. And, like Ginger Rodgers, "she did it going backwards in high heels." Our mother loved the Catholic Church and was an active parishioner at Immaculate Conception, Our Lady of Fatima and, in recent years, Queen of Heaven. Anabel was an active member of the Soroptomist International of Albuquerque for many years and served a term as group president. She was a Life Master at Bridge and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was also Mrs. Albuquerque in 1956. She had an advantage over the competition because when you are raising eight children, being a skilled cook and seamstress are necessary survival skills. Anabel and Jake had eight children, 29 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Her children and their spouses are: Don and Louise Umbrage, Connie and Tom Bradley, Carol and Bob Eldredge, John Umbrage, Ellen and Nick Caristo, Cece Weese, Ric and Ramona Umbrage and Liesa and Fred Morley. She was preceded in death by her husband Jake; son-in-law Tom Bradley; and two grandsons, Michael Bradley and Jeremy Weese and a great-grandson Timothy. She was also preceded in death by parents John and Pansy Tischhauser and her sister Rosemary McNerney. She is survived by her siblings, Jack and Dick Tischhauser and Eustelle O'Rourke. To those she left behind, her passing is the end of a love story, and the kind of parent we all wish could have and all wish we could be. A family friend who grew up in our neighborhood down by 12th Street and Marquette NW told me one time that she had always wished she was in our family because when she visited our home and passed by daily she had this vision of our home as full of kids and laughter and love, a place bursting at the seams with vitality and love. I believe this is one of the best compliments to Jake and Anabel that I had ever heard. A rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 4 at French ~ University Chapel, 1111 University Blvd. NE and a Mass will be celebrated on Friday, November 5, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at Queen of Heaven Catholic Church, 5310 Claremont, NE. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Casa Angelica or New Mexico Junior Livestock Foundation. . Please visit our online guestbook for Anabel atw ww.RememberTheirStory.com.
