BEATTY -- Wanda H. Beatty passed away on October 8, 2010 at the age of 88. She was born Wanda Hale Nesbitt on July 8, 1922, in Schoolcraft, MI to Walter H. and Hazel V. Nesbitt. Wanda attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor where she earned her Registered Nurse diploma after which she joined the Army Nurse Corps in 1945 serving as an Army nurse until her honorable discharge as a 2nd Lt. at the end of WWII. She married Richard B. Beatty (Lt. Col. USAF retired) on June 28, 1961 and made Albuquerque her home from then. Richard passed away in 1997. Wanda worked as a nurse in various clinics during her working career finishing up as the Director of the Albuquerque/Bernalillo County Alcoholism Treatment Program in 1980. Throughout her life Wanda devoted much of her time to volunteer work. While living in Okinawa, Japan, she taught English to the Japanese, was a scout den mother, and a Water Safety Instructor for the Red Cross. In Albuquerque, she concentrated her volunteer work with the Kirtland Air Force Base Protestant Chapel community, teaching Vacation Bible School, playing in the bell choir, attending Sunday School, serving on a wide variety of committees, and participating in most all of the activities of the Protestant Women of the Chapel. Wanda was always committed to causes in which she believed from supporting the civil rights movement's bus boycott in Montgomery, AL, in 1955 by volunteering as a carpool driver for the African American women who worked in her neighborhood, to volunteering for Right to Life activities in New Mexico. She was an avid gardener, played piano, loved to paint, wrote short stories and poetry. Her sense of humor and willingness to speak her mind were almost legendary - if you knew Wanda, you pretty much knew what she thought on almost any subject. Wanda is survived by her sister Audrey Gray of Kalamazoo, MI; her children, Heidi H. Nesbitt of Albuquerque, Timm M. and Kathleen B. Morrison of Boulder, CO; and her grandchildren, Samuel R. Nesbitt of Albuquerque, Andrew R. and Benjamin J. Morrison of Boulder. There will be a viewing from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., Thursday, October 14, 2010 at Daniels Family Funeral Services, 1100 Coal Ave SE.
