AUERBACH -- Irving Auerbach died Wednesday, July 21, 2010, at the age of 91. He was preceded by his wife, of 38 years, Hertha (Hedy). He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law Sheldon and Sharon Auerbach; his niece Deborah Auerbach-Brown, and her husband and children, all of Cleveland Heights, Ohio. Services were held Thursday, July 22, 2010, at Congregation B'nai Israel and Fairview Memorial Park. The services were officiated by Rabbi Arthur Flicker of Congregation B'nai Israel and Cantor Barbara Finn of Congregation Albert. Irving and his wife, Hertha, had been members of both congregations. Irving was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. He received his B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in chemistry at Ohio State University. Although he tried to enlist during World War II, he was required to remain in Columbus, Ohio, and continue his work at the War Research Project then located on the campus of Ohio State University. Irving relocated from Cleveland to Albuquerque in 1959, having accepted a position at the Sandia Corporation as a research chemist. In the course of his career, he authored, co-authored and presented numerous scientific papers. Prior to retirement he was active in and acknowledged by several scientific organizations. Irving was dedicated to the Albuquerque Jewish community and was a member of Congregation B'nai Israel and Congregation Albert. He was most active in Congregation B'nai Israel where he established the synagogue's library and managed their cemetery services. Although a kind, quiet, gentle man he stepped forward to provide a variety of congregation services as the occasions occurred.
