DYER -- Stephen D. Dyer, a long time resident of Albuquerque, died in his home on Thursday, April 29, 2010 after a brief battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, Mary Brosnan Dyer of Albuquerque; his son and daughter-in-law, John and Jenny Dyer and grandson, Rhys of Franklin, TN; his daughter and son-in-law, Leslie and Daniel Maxwell and granddaughter, Audrey of Albuquerque; his sister and brother-in-law, Marilyn and Jim Rowley of Albuquerque; his sister and brother-in-law, Carolyn and Toby Pieri of Glen Carbon, IL; and his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Marti and Sam Stone of Albuquerque. Stephen was born in Kansas City, MO, attended Shawnee Mission schools in Overland Park, KS, where he was an accomplished cross-country runner, and later attended the University of Kansas. He founded Southwest Fire Protection in Albuquerque in 1978. He owned and operated the company for 32 years and it still carries on today. Stephen was actively involved in managing, coaching and refereeing youth little league and soccer teams. He was active in Monte Vista Christian Church where he sang in the choir, served as a youth camp counselor and performed as a bell ringer. Stephen was a member of "Shenanigans", a singing group that performed at parties and events around town. He was involved in the Albuquerque theatre scene as a performer and as a Stage Manager with ACLOA, ALT and other Albuquerque production companies. Stephen loved to cook and was constantly finding something around the house to fix. If nothing in the house was broken, then, being an accomplished draftsman, he would design something and build it. Stephen's laughter and optimism will be missed by all. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent in Stephen's name to the Friends of Rio Grande Nature Center, 2901 Candelaria Road NW, Albuquerque, NM 87107, (505) 343-1373.
