HERRERA -- Basil. 88 years ago, in Chapelle, New Mexico, Basil Herrera entered the world. He was blessed with a zest for life and as a young adult moved to San Francisco, where he worked at the Richmond Shipyards and on the Oakland Bay Bridge. Over the years, he refurbished Victorian houses, and owned a chimney sweep company, gas stations, and a bar and restaurant. Although he had made San Francisco his home, New Mexico was the land he loved. In 1961, he returned to Albuquerque, where he worked as an electrician at Sandia Labs until his retirement in 1986. Basil (known to many of his friends and family as "Bash") led an active life, and loved to travel, hunt, fish, bowl and play baseball. He was blessed with many good friends, and everyone, friends and family alike, admired his quick wit, humor, and generosity. His health began to falter in 2004, and he returned to California to live with his daughter until he passed away on November 5, 2009. His parents, Teodoro and Mary Rafaelita; and his sister, Harriet Fay, precede him in death. Basil leaves behind his daughter, Anna Marie, and her husband, Ron; brother David and his wife, Vera; granddaughters Carri and her husband, Blake; Charlotte and her husband, Danny; and Dana and her husband, Jay; 7 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was a beloved uncle to Cynthia, Diana (Joe), Steven, Alvin (Joy), Helen (Tom), Angel (Phil), Tito, Bobby (Dorothy), Joey, Jackie (Kathy), Mickey. Always loving, always loved, he will be missed. He will be interred at a graveside service Mt. Cavalry Cemetery on Saturday, April 24, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. Friends and family are invited to his celebration of life.
