GOEBEL -- Martin A Goebel died in his home in Albuquerque, NM on Friday, April 9, 2010 at the age of 81 after a long battle with cancer. He was born November 8, 1928 to Anton and Margreth (Elmer) Goebel on their family farm in West Point, Nebraska. Martin attended rural District 65, and then graduated from Guardian Angels High School in the class of 1945. He then entered the U.S. Army in 1947 and was stationed in Korea and Japan. After his discharge in 1949, he attended Loyola University of Los Angeles where he met and married Diana Kinley. During this time Martin was actively involved in the new and upcoming field of data processing and the eventual computer business. They then moved to Arizona where he was one of the first to become a computer operator, programmer, and salesman for the UNIVAC Division of Sperry Rand. In 1976 they were transferred to Albuquerque, NM as State Manager for the Commercial Division. He remained at that position until he retired in 1988. Martin and his wife Diana purchased a motor home and traveled extensively to the different parts of Canada and the United States, especially New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado and the Northeast States, until 2005 when his wife Diana died of cancer. He was also involved in genealogy of his Goebel family roots, with over 7200 family members in his database. He did much of his research on the Internet, as well as through manual means, and arranged a number of family reunions in both Fremont and West Point. His greatest reward was at their first family reunion in Fremont, when two childhood friends from West Point of over 50 years greeted each other by saying "I didn't know that we were related". In 2008 he met and married Iris Goodrich of Albuquerque where they lived until his death. Survivors include: his wife Iris; a son, Daniel M. (and wife Deborah) Goebel of Peoria, AZ; daughter Susan A. (and husband Jon) Heck of Glendale, AZ; four grandchildren, Jason (and wife Trish) Goebel and Heather Goebel of Peoria, AZ; Jennifer and Catlin Heck in Glendale, AZ; as well as 3 step-grandchildren; a brother Alphonse of Fremont; sisters Leona Kasik of Norfolk and Louise (and husband Orion) Schultzkump of West Point. Martin was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Patricia who died in 1998; a brother, William H.; and a sister, Sister M Rosita.
