RAMSEY -- Woodrow "Woody" Ramsey passed away on Easter Sunday, April 4, 2010 with his family by his side at the age of 91. He was born in Chillicothe, Texas on September 2, 1918 to William and Lettie Ramsey and was the youngest of their ten children. Upon graduation from Chillicothe High School, Woody went to Texas Tech University which is where he met Natalie Parker and they would have celebrated their 69 wedding anniversary in May. Woody played football at Texas Tech and played halfback in the Cotton Bowl on January 1, 1939 in Dallas, Texas. Woody wanted to be a pilot and enlisted in the Air Force in September 1940. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and awarded his pilot wings in April 1941. In World War II, he served in Europe as Group Operations Officer of the 31st Fighter Group and commanded the 307th Fighter Squadron of the 31st Fighter Group. He was stationed in Japan after the war and his military service included Korea and Viet Nam. He received numerous decorations and medals including the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters and the Joint Services Commendation Medal. He was also stationed in New Delhi, India where he served as Air Attache to India. After 30 years of military service, Woody retired as a Colonel on February 1, 1970. After retiring from the Air Force, his next mission was to play golf. He played every day he could except Monday, and that was because the golf course was closed. He played with his friends in foursomes, tournaments, and as he got older senior tournaments. He truly loved playing a game of golf. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who loved his family and will be missed. His family would like to thank the employees at The Court in Reno who took such good care of him after his health failed. Woody is survived by his wife Natalie; his daughter Patricia (Bill); grandchildren, Dana Ouart (Nick) and Travis Neumann. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers; and sisters. A viewing will be held 10:00 -11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 13, 2010 at Walton Funeral Home, 875 W. Second St., in Reno. Interment with full military honors will follow at the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, in Fernley, NV.
