BRYAN -- Garlan D. Bryan Jr., 85, passed away Tuesday, March 23, 2010 after a long illness. He was born September 12, 1924, in Winona, Mississippi to Garlan Diggs Bryan and Maude Kennedy Bryan. He is survived by Sally L. Bryan, his wife of 63 years; daughter, Carrie and husband, John Atkins of Rio Rancho; sister, Berniece Stanford of Belzoni, Mississippi; sister-in-law, Margaret Hawk and husband, Robert of Albuquerque; niece, Jackie Chama of Eugene, Oregon; nephew, Charles Stanford of Nashville, Tennessee; step-granddaughter Addie Atkins Delahoussaye and husband, Dayne of Houston, Texas; step-grandson, John R. Atkins and wife, Cori of Houston, Texas, and great-grandchildren Lily Delahoussaye, Jane Delahoussaye and Claire Atkins. He was preceded in death by his eldest sister, Joyce Lavelle. Garlan attended the University of Texas, where he played on the varsity tennis team. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from the School of Architecture in 1948. Shortly thereafter, he became a partner in the firm of Flatow, Moore, Bryan, and Fairburn of Albuquerque, with branch offices in Phoenix and Colorado Springs. He served as Executive Vice President and CEO when the firm incorporated as Flatow, Moore, Bryan and Associates in 1965. He retired from the firm in 1991, opening an office where he continued to do the work he loved until the summer of 2009. He served as the first president of the Albuquerque Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, and taught Architectural Design at the University of Texas and Architectural Professional Practice at the University of New Mexico. He was also active on many advisory boards, and was instrumental in developing the first Handicapped Accessibility Standards for the State of New Mexico. He served as Chairman of the first Uniform Building Code Committee for the City of Albuquerque and the Construction Industry Advisory Committee from 1973 to 1993. He particularly enjoyed serving as a judge for the Associated General Contractors of America Best Building Awards. During his long career he was recognized many times for exemplary performance. Among these were the Architect of the Year Award, Western Mountain Region AIA, 1954; New Mexico Society of Architects Service Award, 1966; Design Excellence Award, College & University Business Magazine, for the UNM College of Education, 1967; New Mexico Society of Architects Award of Honor for the UNM Biology Building, 1970; Albuquerque Chapter AIA Professional Award, 1985; Association of General Contractors SIR Award, 1985; Outstanding Contribution to the New Mexico Memorial of Perpetual Tears; and the prestigious Owens-Corning Energy Conservation Award for the Willow Creek Office Building in Idaho Falls, Idaho. He gave of his talents freely, and contributed many hours of design services without compensation for those in need. Garlan was a fan of classical music, and avid golfer, and lifelong lover of animals. He was past president of the Arabian Horse Association of New Mexico and the New Mexico Horse Council. He also participated in many fundraising activities for the Animal Humane Association, the Children's Peace Statue Project, the American Lung Association, and Walkin' N Circles Equine Rescue and Rehabilitation Ranch. Garlan's many talents, unfailing optimism, dry wit, and subtle sense of humor will be missed by those who were fortunate enough to know him. Memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 27, 2010, 1:00 p.m., at French - University.
