NUNNS -- Kathryn Ellen Nunns, 93, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, welcomed the Lord's peace on March 9, 2010. She joins her husband "Gar"(Edgar) whom she deeply loved and missed. Kathryn was born on a small farm between Sutton and Genva, Nebraska on May 30, 1916. She was one of five children; two brothers and three sisters born to Albert and Mayme (Burns) Yetman. Her family was very close and loved and cared for each other all of their lives. Her father, Bert passed away when Kathryn was a very young girl and with the coming of the depression and the dust bowl years, her family faced great hardship. However, Kathryn and her family always felt blessed during these years as Kathryn often recounted how friends helped friends, neighbors support neighbors and families cared for each other. Kathryn earned her teaching certificate and became a country school teacher. She went on to attend the University of Nebraska and Northwestern University majoring in Education and Art. She paid for her education by finding employment in some of the finest resorts of the day in Colorado and California and stores in New York City and Chicago. Kathryn also traveled the country visiting every state except one. After college, she taught 1st grade in Omaha, Nebraska and in San Diego, CA. She also was a substitute teacher for APS. Perhaps her proudest accomplishment in the field of education was the founding of a small private school for deaf children in Albuquerque during the 1970's when none existed. After the War, and during a visit home to see her mother, Kathryn met and fell in love with her future husband, Edgar, a mechanical engineer. In the early 1950's they moved to Albuquerque where Edgar went to work for Kirkland Air Force Base and then started his own company, as their family grew to eight children. Some of Kathryn's fondest memories of Albuquerque were raising her young family in her lovely home in the Ridgecrest area. After Edgar retired, Kathryn and Edgar could often be found working as volunteers during services at one of several Catholic Churches they attended. They also quietly and with little notice helped take care of a number of their dearest friends who were WWII vets when they or their spouses fell ill, including several who were Bataan survivors. In life, Kathryn will be remembered for many things by her family and friends. She was a wonderful and graceful lady who loved and was loved by her family and husband and we are all grateful to have had her for so long. She loved children, teaching, caring for others, her flowers and New Mexico sunsets war among the many things she enjoyed in life. She always has a warm smile and a word of encouragement for anyone in need. However, nothing speaks to the heart of Kathryn more that the strength, comfort and peace she found in the Love of Jesus, Our Lord and Savior. She is survived by her sons and daughters: Bill Nunns and wife Margaret, Roberta Flynn and husband Jim, Jim Nunns and wife Gail Peterson, Beth Nunns-Wood and husband Edward, Tim Nunns, Patrick Nunns and wife Carolyn, Barry Nunns and Michael Nunns; Five grandchildren, Jimmy, Michelle, Maria, Kenny, Tommy; and five great-grandchildren. Kathryn was preceded in death by her husband Edgar "Gar" Nunns; and her brothers and sisters: Leo, Robert, Mary and Eileen. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, March 18, 2010 at 11:30 a.m. at Gateof Heaven Chapel, 5310 Clarmont N E. Condolences may me sent to www.danielsfuneral.com Kathryn's care has been entrusted to Daniels Family Funeral Service, 3113 Carlisle Boulevard, NE Albuquerque, New Mexico 87110 (505) 884-1188.
