SELBY -- Charles Ferdinand Selby, Jr. passed away peacefully on February 22, 2010. He is survived by his daughter, Lynda Hahn and husband, David and his son, Kenneth Selby. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Nicole Alma Selby, Steven Hahn, Michael (Mick) Hahn and Mick's fiancee, Alisha Bacoccini. His nephew, Matthew Selby also survives him. Charles was born in Swansboro, North Carolina on June 6, 1926. He grew up in Belhaven, North Carolina where he met his childhood sweetheart, Georgia (Porgie) Winstead. They would marry in 1995 after meeting again at a class reunion. They graduated together from Belhaven High School in 1943. She preceded him in death in March 2009. Charles was not allowed to serve in the armed forces due to his severe asthma. He attended North Carolina State University for a short time and then hitchhiked across country to Albuquerque in the mid 1940s. He worked for Springer Transport and also delivered Dr. Pepper to Socorro, Mountainair and other towns along the route. Charles then moved back to the Virginia Tidewater area to work with his father and step-mother in Charles' Beauty School and Supply House where he met Alma Collinsworth. They married in 1947 and, after over 30 years of marriage, divorced. Charles and Alma moved out to Albuquerque shortly after their marriage and he then attended the University of New Mexico and obtained his BA in accounting. He went to work for Sandia National Laboratories and retired as a supervisor in cost accounting for weapons development in 1984. Charles' hobbies included reading, following the stock market, keeping up with tax laws and watching and offering his opinion about CSPAN. The family would like to thank the staff at Unlimited Care (Blanca and Humberto Gasson) for the nursing and hospice care provided Porgie and Charles. You all are angels on earth doing God's work with the elderly in their final years. In keeping with Charles' stated wishes, there will be a private/family service only. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of New Mexico, 9500 Montgomery Blvd., NE, Ste. 209, Albuquerque, NM 87111-2579. Although there will be no public memorial, please visit our online guestbook for Charles at RememberTheirStory.com
