GARCIA -- Ruben, 76, an Albuquerque area Horseman and longtime restaurateur, passed away from a sudden heart attack on Wednesday morning, February 3, 2010. He was born December 23, 1933 to Islavio and Isabel Garcia. Ruben is survived by his wife of 45 years, Lucy Garcia, his three children; son, Alonzo Garcia and wife Hilary Butler of Des Moines, IA, son, Nicholas Sandoval and wife Geraldine, Liz Sandoval and husband Edward, his sisters Josie Vigil, Annie Cordova, brothers David and Tim Garcia, and brother-in-law Mike Sacoman all of Albuquerque. His grandchildren held a special place in his heart, and he spoke of them often, they are; Alonzo Garcia, Jr., Jason Sandoval, Ruben J. Garcia, Gabriel Sandoval and Rita Garcia, Ruben is also survived by nine great-grandchildren. Ruben, a life long area businessman, was the owner of several area restaurants and a pioneer of the food pavilion at the New Mexico State Fair in the early 80's and was awarded a proclamation for his efforts. Ruben was also a Horseman and raced at meets around the state for 40 years. He was a member of the New Mexico Horseman's Association as well as the Horse Breeders Association. Every year he attended the Breeder's Cup Races all around the country including New York, Florida, Kentucky, Maryland and California, and went to train his horses daily at Albuquerque Downs Race track. Casket bearers will be Alonzo Garcia, Jason Sandoval, Gabriel Sandoval, Aaron Sacoman, Ruben Garcia and Roland Martinez. Honorary Casket bearers are; Rita Garcia, and Brian Baloskovits. A rosary will be recited at 7:00pm Monday, February 8, 2010 at Garcia Mortuary 8th street chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday morning at 9:00am at St. Anne Catholic Church.
