GORTON -- William J. Gorton, 79, a resident of Albuquerque since 1957 died peacefully, Saturday, January 9, 2010. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ada; son, Donald; and daughters Demaris Hargis (Dwayne), Susan Whitfield (Anthony); and six grandchildren, Kristina, Sarah, Drew Gorton, and Conner, Cameron, and Chandler Hargis. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Bert and Eileen Gorton; and brother, Melvin. A graduate of Penn State University with a degree in Industrial Engineering, Bill worked at ACF Industries for ten years, then retired from DOE in 1996. Bill, a lifetime Presbyterian, was a member of La Mesa Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder and on numerous committees. A sports enthusiast, he played high school football, baseball, and wrestled for DuBois High School. Later, he became an avid tennis competitor. During retirement he enjoyed tennis, church activities, volunteering with SCORE, and visiting with family and grandchildren. Visitation will be Thursday, January 14, 2010 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at French Lomas Chapel. A memorial service will be held Friday, January 15, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at La Mesa Presbyterian Church, 7401 Copper NE with reception following. Should friends desire, memorial contributions can be made to the William J. Gorton Memorial Fund at La Mesa Presbyterian Church.
