FISHER -- Mary Jane Fisher. Born Mary Jane Fyke in Jackson, Mississippi on September 14, 1927 and died peacefully in her sleep on November 20, 2009. Mary Jane earned her undergraduate degree in music at Westminster Choir College, a Masters degree in music at the University of Michigan, and later received her teaching certificate and a Masters degree in education also from the University of Michigan. While at the University of Michigan she met and married Charles Raymond Fisher. Mary Jane taught in the Ann Arbor Public schools for many years, including positions at Burns Park elementary and Clague middle school. A strong believer in equality in education, she worked very hard to ensure that all the children under her tutelage got the best education possible. Through her life she has been an active member in P.E.O. In both the Ann Arbor and Albuquerque chapters. She is survived by her husband, Charles R Fisher, of Albuquerque, New Mexico and three children, Charles R. Fisher Jr. of State College, PA; Andrew G. Fisher of San Francisco, CA; and Susan J. Fisher of Ann Arbor, and Dexter, MI.; and grandchild Lisann Fisher of San Diego, CA. Mary Jane was a consummate teacher and mentor whether working in the public schools, teaching friends to cook, knit, or sew or as a volunteer reading tutor for both adults and children in need. She was an enthusiastic traveler and visited much of the world. She loved all things made by hand, was herself an accomplished knitter and weaver, and especially appreciated the traditional crafts of natives peoples the world over. She excelled in all she did and will be missed by all who knew her. There will be a memorial service in Ann Arbor, Michigan at Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church on Saturday, November 28, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. followed by a celebration of Mary Jane's life at 3:00 p.m. at the Barton Hills Country Club. In lieu of flowers, Mary Jane would like donations made to your favorite charity or simply a smile in her memory.
