HARTY -- Gene R. Harty, 74, a resident of Horseshoe Springs, NM, in the Jemez Mountains, passed away peacefully on November 7, 2009, after a long battle with cancer. He was born to Gwendolyn London and Cecil Eugene Harty on November 14, 1934 in Carlsbad, NM. He is survived by his loving wife, Rose Mary, of 46 years; daughters, Liz Winn, Jeanine Rogers, and Gwenette Bradley and husband Larry; grandchildren, Steve Winn and wife Heather, Mike Winn, Shawna Chavira and husband Steven, Eric Rogers, and Tessa Bradley; great-grandchildren, Stevie Chavira, Justyn Winn, and Samantha Chavira, and brother-in-law, James Gleason. Gene proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War with the 187th Airborne Regimental Combat Team. Gene lived by the motto "Freedom is not Free". He had a long career, mostly dedicated to the defense of our country. He spent 10 years with ACF Industries and in 1967 went to work for Sandia National Labs as a mechanical engineer until his retirement in 1990. After moving to Horseshoe Springs, he became involved with the La Cueva Volunteer Fire Department and served on the search and rescue team. Gene loved nature, the outdoors and physical fitness. He shared hunting, shooting and woodworking with his family and was a lifetime member of the NRA. Gene played a central role in the creation of the Horseshoe Springs community at La Cueva. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Gene's life will be held Sunday, November 22, 2009, 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., at American Legion, Post 75, 17691 State Hwy 4, Jemez Springs, NM.
