NEWSOM -- Christine M. Newsom, 46, of Greenville, NC, died Thursday, October 22, 2009. Christine was born December 14, 1962 in Washington, DC to Keith and Brigitte Newsom of Fort Washington Forest, MD. She was the youngest of three children. When she was eight years old she moved with her parents to Albuquerque, NM. she graduated from El Dorado high school in 1980 and completed work on a Bachelor of Science degree at the University of New Mexico in 1984. She enjoyed sports and was a member of her high school volleyball team. She enjoyed hiking and camping in the mountains, and she loved music. Christine's early accomplishments were all the more remarkable because while she was still in middle school and high school her mother became more and more incapacitated from the ravages of Huntington's disease. Her mother died in 1984 at age 50. Unfortunately Christine inherited the gene for Huntington's disease for which there is no cure and which invariably results in an early death. During her long illness Christine demonstrated great courage and good humor, but the illness is debilitating, cruel and relentless. Christine was preceded in death by her mother; and several aunts and uncles. She is survived by her father Keith R. Newsom of Greenville, NC; her sister Sylvia (William) Hunneke of Greenville, NC; her brother Rob (Sidney) Newsom of Richland, WA; and her aunt Hazel Hanson of Marysville, KS. She also leaves a niece and nephew, Sadie and Zachary Newsom of Richland, WA, and several cousins from various locations. Christine has been cremated and no services will be held at this time. A small informal memorial service is planned tentatively for next spring at Woodland cemetery near North Bend, Nebraska. At that time, on a plot next to her uncle Jack Newsom, a grave stone honoring Christine and her immediate family members will be dedicated. Memorials may be directed to your charity of choice or to the Huntington Disease Society of America, 505 Eighth Avenue, Suite 902, New York, NY 10018. As Christine walks through the valley of the shadow of death she fears no evil for she is on a direct pathway to heaven!
