BARELA -- Abelicio Baca "A.B." Barela was born on June 5, 1918 and died on October 30, 2009 at age 91. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Beneranda; his youngest daughter, Berlinda; and his first great-grandson, Aidan Oshiro. Survivors include his children, Dan Barela and wife, Donna, Esmerlindo Barela, Jennifer B. Montano and husband, Jake, Joe Barela and wife, Anna, and Francine La Jeunesse; his grandchildren, Natalie Barela, Mario Montano and wife, Jonna, Dominic Montano, Andrea Barela, Vanessa Barela, JoAna Barela, and Olivia Oshiro and husband, Brian; great-grandchildren, Nolan and Gavin Oshiro; and his kitty cats, Jack and Jill. Mr. Barela worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps, then served in World War II. He went on to earn a college degree at New Mexico State University, then continued with graduate courses at New Mexico Tech and St. Joseph's College. He was a teacher for many years, then worked with the Federal Housing Administration. Upon retirement, he worked part-time as a crossing guard leaving plenty of time for his passion of reading and junk collecting. Mr. Barela was a member of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Church for over forty-five years, serving as an usher. He was the treasurer of the CCC Alumni Association. Mr. Barela will be remembered for his strong will, his incredible sense of humor and for his unwavering devotion to his Catholic faith. The family would sincerely like to thank the many physicians and nurses who assisted with Mr. Barela's care. A special thanks to the 4th and 5th floor nurses at the VA hospital, Nurse Dolores Peterson and her CEC students, caregiver, Ron Archibeque, Vista Care Hospice, and the many neighbors, family and friends who provided care and support. Pallbearers will be Jake Montano, Mario Montano, Dominic Montano, Edwin Dominguez, Johnny Battaglia, Larry Gardner, and Pete Vigil. Visitation will be at Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 5415 Fortuna Rd. NW on Sunday, November 1, 2009, 2:00 p.m. with Rosary to follow at 2:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, November 2, 2009, 9:00 a.m. at Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Church.
