SCHMITT -- Albert Eugene "Smitty" Schmitt, age 75, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, August 4, 2009 after a long battle with cancer. Albert was comforted in his final hours by family and friends. Albert is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Nancy, daughter Mary and David Bowman, son Robert and Tina Schmitt, son Joseph and Shirley Schmitt, daughter Jennifer and Todd Miller, son James Schmitt and Thomas Myrick. He is also survived by his nine grandchildren, Jason (and fiancee Breanna), Skyler (and wife Kendra), Kelsey, Sarah and Christopher Schmitt, Stephanie (and fiancee Kyle) and Sara Bowman, and Kristen and Julie Miller. He is also survived by two great-grandsons, Wyatt Thompson and Aiden Schmitt, as well as many extended family members and friends. Albert was preceded in death by his parents Albert Joseph and Frances Marie (Frings) Schmitt, his sisters Eleanor Guyon, Sister Magdalene Schmitt, and Elaine Schmitt, and his brother Karl and Wiemer Schmitt. Albert was born the fifth of six children on April 21, 1934 in Leonore, Illinois. He grew up a hard-working farm boy before joining the Air Force at the age of 21. After spending 24 years in the military, he retired in Albuquerque in 1977. He then worked for 18 years at General Electric, before retiring in 1994. Albert loved helping others and never failed to greet family, friends or strangers with a smile and a compliment. He was a lifelong Cubs fan who rarely missed a game on television. He loved playing pool, bowling, pitching horseshoes, and spending time with family and friends. He and Nancy enjoyed traveling across the U.S. in their RV to visit family and see new places. Albert touched the lives of so many and will be deeply missed by all. Memorial Services will be held at Daniels Family Funeral Services - Carlisle Chapel Saturday, August 8, 2009 at 11 o'clock a.m. Interment will be held at Santa Fe National Cemetery at a later date.
