GARCIA -- Alfonso I. Garcia, 88, died peacefully at his home on July 29, 2009 while he was surrounded by his loving family. Alfonso was born May 15, 1921 in Wagon Mound, NM, the son of Alfredo and Juanita (Rodriquez) Garcia. He spent his boyhood in the Raton area. During WWII, Alfonso enlisted in the US Army and served with the 804th Tank Destroyer Battalion that was involved in many battles throughout the European theatre including the liberating of Rome. Through his distinguished service, he and his unit were decorated with a medal from France. Alfonso retired from Rockwell International in California and later moved to Bernalillo, NM in 1986. Some of Alfonso's pastimes included reading, drawing, listening to music and dancing. He also loved his dogs. He always had a least one dog and his children gained their love of pets from their father. Alfonso is survived by his wife of 63 years, Lita; daughters, Marcella Johnson and husband Frosty of Bernalillo, Christina Garcia and husband Michael Davison of Toluca Lake, CA; son, Thomas Garcia and wife Laura of Arlington, TX; eight grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and one brother, Alfred E. Garcia of Albuquerque. The Rosary will be recited at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, August 4, 2009 followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Bernalillo.
