MARTINEZ -- Jose Macario "Max" Martinez 69; a resident of Albuquerque for 30 years and formerly of Cheyenne, Wyoming, passed away on July 6, 2009 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Max was born in Mora, NM on December 12, 1939, the son of Manuel Leal Martinez and Simonita Valdez Martinez. He is survived by his wife of 44 years Grace M. Martinez; daughter Cindy Martinez and fiance Michael Lee, daughter Patricia Astorga and husband Gilbert Astorga; and two adoring grandsons Dominik Astorga and Gabriell Astorga all of Albuquerque; brothers Marty (Manuel) Martinez & wife Lynn of Albuquerque; Albino Martinez & wife Debi of Terra Haute, IN; George Martinez & wife Beverly of Cheyenne, WY; niece Denise Boyden and nephew Mike Martinez of Albuquerque; numerous nieces, nephews; cousins; brothers and sisters-in-law; extended family members and numerous friends in Wyoming, New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona and Indiana. His parents; his brother Pat Martinez; and niece Kathy Martinez preceded him in death. Max grew up in Cheyenne, graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1958 and had a successful life. He began with his military service in the US Navy beginning in 1959. He trained in San Diego and then served on the following assignments: 1959 - USS Thetis Bay LPH-6 PACFLT; 1960 - USS Jupiter AVS-8 PACFLT; and 1962 - USS Ticonderoga (CVA-14) PACFLT. After successfully completing four years he was honorably discharged in San Diego in August 1963 as a QM3 (E-4). He later dedicated himself to military service again in the NM Air National Guard from 1983 to 1986 with an Honorable Discharge as SSGT. Max graduated in 1965 from State Barber College in Denver, CO. He married Margie Abeyta in Cheyenne in 1965 and his legacy continued. Max was a Barber at FEW AFB & later owned & operated Carey Avenue Barbershop (1965-1978); then moved to Albuquerque from Cheyenne and worked as a barber and worked for the VA Hospital until 1984. He worked for the U.S.P.S. (1984-2004) then retired in 2004 after 32 years of Federal Gov't Service. Max was a parishioner at Risen Savior Catholic Community. He enjoyed running and ran in several Duke City Marathons; he worked out at the gym and enjoyed talking with everyone in the pool and sauna; he enjoyed traveling with his daughters; his brothers-in-law Gilbert and Martin Abeyta and friends Al & Lora Sanchez and cruising with Jake & Rita Herrera. He enjoyed his last trip with his wife, daughter & son-in-law and grandsons to Colorado Springs, Cheyenne, Devils Tower and Mt. Rushmore. He took pleasure in giving haircuts to friends, co-workers and family. He is and will always be loved, cherished and respected for all he has given to his family and friends and for his unselfish demeanor. He was instantly your friend and enjoyed life. Cremation has taken place. A Rosary will be recited Thursday, July 9, 2009, 9:15 a.m. at Risen Savior Catholic Community, 7701 Wyoming Blvd. NE, a Memorial Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., at Risen Savior Catholic Community. Ennichement will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
