BLUMENSTIEL -- Zelda Longman Blumenstiel passed away at 102 years of age on Monday April 6, 2009 after a brief illness, in Sandia Park, NM. Born February 8, 1907 in Norfolk, Virginia, the third child of Tillie and Samuel Longman's six children, Zelda was preceded in death by Mervin Alexander Blumenstiel, her darling husband of 50 years, and by her dear sisters and brothers Henry Longman, Elizabeth Longman, Max Longman and Libby Longman Greene. Zelda is survived by her brother David and sister-in-law Mimi Longman; by son Alexander David and partner Gertrude S. Moffat of Waban, MA, daughter Clare Sue and son-in-law Ronald R. Levene of Sandia Park, NM; by grandchildren Alyssa D. Levene Dietrich and husband Richard Dietrich of Albuquerque, NM, Todd S. Levene and wife Lucy Levene of Denver, CO, April M. Blumenstiel Papajohn and husband Andre Papajohn of Lincoln, MA, Geoffrey H. Levene and wife Elanit Levene of Kew Gardens, NY, Moses A. Blumenstiel of Sommerville, MA, and David M. and Samuel T. Blumenstiel of Waban, MA, and by great-grandchildren Joshua Levene and Alexandria Dietrich. Zelda and Mervin married in 1939. They moved from Jamaica, NY, where they were active in Temple Israel, to Cold Spring Hills, NY, where they had built their own home with their children in 1954, and joined Temple Beth El of Huntington. They opened and for many years until retirement, operated "The Garden Lot" on New York Avenue, Huntington Station. After Mervin's passing in 1991, Zelda moved to New Mexico to be with her daughter and last resided at the Fairwinds Retirement Community in Rio Rancho, NM. Services and internment were Wednesday, April 8, 2009 at Mount Lebanon Cemetery, Glendale, NY. Please contact Fairwinds after April 15 for the date and time of the Memorial Service to be held there. Contributions in Zelda's name to any Jewish organization or hospice, in lieu of flowers, will be greatly appreciated.
