SWARTZ -- Dorothy Louise Swartz, 95, passed away March 22, 2009. Ms. Swartz was born in Alderson, Oklahoma, January 25, 1914. She graduated from Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma where she was one of the first classes to graduate from the newly accredited dietetic internship program in 1938. She then spent four years as a dietitian at the State College in Oklahoma before going into the Medical Service of the U.S. Army in 1942. During her tour of duty as an Administrative Dietitian, she traveled to bases in Africa, Italy, Manila, Japan, Hawaii, and Albuquerque NM. Here she retired from the Army Hospital in 1964 after serving 22 years of service. Serving during WWII gave her a tremendous feeling of patriotism, that she could serve her Country in her small way. A descendent of General Robert E. Lee of the Civil War era, Ms. Swartz followed family tradition of pride and patriotism. She was a member of the Retired Officers Association and past member of the American Dietetic Association. Upon retiring from the service, she worked for a short time as a Dietitian for Lovelace Hospital. Deciding to try other pursuits, she worked at the Empress Wedding Dress Shop and the Townhouse Dress Shop, retiring in 1978. Ms. Swartz enjoyed many hobbies, her favorite being bird watching, growing pansies, and delicious tomatoes. She lived at La Vida Llena Retirement Community for over twenty years and had made many friends there during those years. She was a loving, tenderhearted person, a loyal and true friend. She loved her family, friends, and Country and will be greatly missed. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Harrison Swartz and Gertrude Hamilton Swartz; sisters, Marjorie Brown, Marie Stover and Delpha Rosenbaum. She is survived by nephew, Don Brown and wife, Darlene of Hot Springs, AR; nieces, Karen Stover Thomas and husband, Sidney of Mesa, AZ, Vera Marie Anderson and husband, Bill of Richmond, VA; great nieces, Brandee Johnson, Nancy Delorme, Kimberly Thomas and Kelly Romano, not excluding several grand nieces and nephews. She also leaves her "Albuquerque Family", JoAnn Zingg; and children Jacqueline Compton and Mark Zingg along with caregiver and close friend Esther Sanchez. The family would like to express their appreciation to those at LVL and Vista Care Hospice who cared for and gave that extra expression of kindness to our loved one during her stay in assisted living and healthcare. There will be a Memorial Service held at the La Vida Llena Retirement Community Chapel, Monday, March 30, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at 2:00 p.m., at Santa Fe National Cemetery.
