SALAZAR -- Dr. John Anthony Salazar passed away January 27, 2009 at age 85. He was born July 5, 1923 in Alcalde, NM to Delphina Baros and Antonio Salazar. He graduated from high school at age 15 and taught school in Alcalde in 1942 at age 17. He then enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He completed his BS degree Summa Cum Laude in 1948 at the University of New Mexico. He earned his Doctorate in clinical psychology at Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri in 1951. He moved back to Albuquerque and first worked as the Chief Clinical psychologist at the Veteran Administration Hospital. He then went into private practice in Clinical Psychology in 1955 until he retired. He testified for both the plaintiff/defendant in both clinical/ criminal cases, hundreds of times as a Forensic Neurological psychologist, served as a consultant to the Job Corps as the Regional Mental Health Coordinator and as the Mental Health Consultant to the New Mexico State Penitentiary from 1967-68. He served as Secretary of Corrections for the state of New Mexico but resigned just after predicting the riots that ensued. In tandem with his clinical practice, he ran the Southwestern Cooperative Educational Lab. He is survived by his wife Judith W Salazar; his daughter Dr. Emily Salazar and son-in-law Fermin Hernandez; son John Anthony Salazar II; daughter Corky (Elaine) Salazar; daughter Dawne Salazar-Moore and son-in-law Justin Moore; his grandsons Ehren, John Anthony, Zachary and Lucas; and his siblings, Candido Salazar; Lucy Tafoya; Violeta Anderson and her husband Darrel; and Mary Salazar-Sutton and her husband Mel. He was dedicated to his profession and had a passion for his craft and did it "My way." He will be greatly missed by his family. Burial will be at the Santa Fe National Cemetery, at 2:30 PM Wednesday, February 4, 2009. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory may be given to All Faiths Receiving Home or a charity of your choice. The family would like to give special thanks to Vistacare Hospice, especially, his nurse Ann for all their help in taking care of John over the last few years and in his final days.
