HAYES -- Everett G. Hayes passed away on Monday, January 19, 2009. He was born on Saturday, March 11, 1916, in New Haven, CT and was raised in both New Haven and Bethany, CT. He is survived by his wife, Amelia; two sons, Robert Hayes and Jack Hayes; one daughter, Christine Duncan; and two grandchildren, Sarah and Jamie Duncan, all of Albuquerque. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Carol Ann Hayes. Everett was employed by the Telephone Company in CT until 1942, when he joined the U.S. Army. He entered the Aviation Cadets, graduating in 1942 from the June class of 43F as a 2nd Lt. Pilot. Everett flew to England in a B-24 Bomber and completed 30 combat missions with the 446th Bomb Group as a co-pilot/pilot over Germany. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and four Air Medals. Everett then returned to the States, becoming a B-24 instructor pilot. He then joined the Ferry Command and flew B-24s, B-25s, A-26s, P-47s, P-51s, P-63s, and P-40s within the States. After leaving active duty in 1945, he earned a commercial single/multi-engine instructors rating and taught flying. He continued to serve in the Army Reserves until the late 1950's, resigning as a major. Everett married the love of his life, Amelia Kollins in 1947. He flew her over Manhattan from Connecticut in his open cockpit Stearman in 1946. In 1947, they drove to Albuquerque where Everett enrolled at the University of New Mexico, graduating in 1952 as a mechanical engineer. He was then hired as a staff engineer at Sandia National Laboratories and retired from there 29 years later, in 1981. Throughout his retirement, he enjoyed traveling throughout the country in his motor home with Amelia, and camping on his 15 acre mountain property, 26 miles east of Albuquerque. Everett loved to listen to Johnny Cash. Everett was a kind man, the consummate family man, and the best husband, father, and grandfather that anyone could ever have. We didn't want him to leave us but we know he will be safe in the arms of our Lord. We will all miss him very much. Services will be held on Tuesday, February 3, 2009, 11:00 a.m., at St. Luke Lutheran Church, 9100 Menaul Blvd. NE. Interment will follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery.
