GALLEGOS -- Mary M. (Mercedes) Gallegos, age 83, a life-long resident of Belen, NM, passed away on Tuesday, September 2, 2008. She was a member of Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church. She was born on September 24, 1924 to Fidel Luna and Tomasita Carrejo. In 1945, she married the love of her life, Jose Gallegos and raised four wonderful children, Jennie, Lawrence, Helen and Shirley. She was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy. She left behind eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Mercedes took care of all her grandchildren beginning with Bryan, the oldest, to Crystal, the youngest and all in between. She was looking forward to Crystal's wedding on Saturday, September 6, 2008. She will be there in spirit. Mercedes treated her children's spouses like her own, Artie, Gertrude, Eddie and Ralph. They treated her like their own mother. Artie, Gertrude and Eddie lost their mothers at a very young age and Mercedes became a second mother to them. She was devastated when her son-in-law, Artie, passed away in June of 2007 and when her brother, Salomon passed away on August 10. Now they can be together. Mercedes was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband, Jose; her brothers, Salomon and Robert; and her very special son-in-law, Artie Mascarena Mercedes is survived by her children, Jennie Mascarena, Lawrence and his wife, Gertrude, Helen Baca and her husband, Eddie and Shirley Baca and her husband, Ralph. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Bryan Mascarena, Brenda Montoya, Melissa Baca, Josephine Deanda, Francisco Baca, Carolyn Baca, Rufus Baca and Crystal Baca along with their spouses; and by nine great-grandchildren, Jason, Mathew, Loren (Lorie), Isaiah (Idai), Francisco, Tyler James (Tylen), Jose, Noah (Nova) and Gabriel. She is also survived by her brothers, Ernest Luna and his wife, Linda of Madera, CA, Raymond Luna and his wife Mary of Eagle Pass, TX and John Luna and his wife, Glenna of Belen along with many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. She will be missed by everyone who knew her. All Services will be held at Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church, beginning with a viewing on Sunday, September 7, 2008, at 3:00 p.m. with a Rosary to be recited at 4:00 p.m. a final visitation will be held on Monday, September 8, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. with a Funeral Mass to be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Our Lady of Belen Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be her grandchildren, Bryan Mascarena, Francisco Baca and Rufus Baca, her son-in-law, Eddie Baca and her nephews, Daniel Luna and Paul (Wimpy) Gallegos.
