TWITTY -- Sandra M. Twitty, passed away Wednesday, June 11, 2008, at Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces. Sandra had been staying at the Las Cruces Nursing Center for several weeks while recovering from hip surgery. Sandra was born in Newport, RI, to John and Grace Manchester on November 27, 1927. She grew up in Ardsley, NY, and as a result of health problems as a young girl, also lived in Tucson, AZ, with Gladys and Bill Wharton, for about three years. She was the oldest of three children, and was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Jackie; youngest son, Steven Glenn; and former husband, Jack. Sandra is survived by her sons David (Las Cruces), and Jack; his wife, Nancy; granddaughter Ashley, grandson Jackson, (all of San Cristobal, NM); and by her sister, Carol and her husband Phillip (Florida). She married Jack Twitty in 1950 and had a baby (David - 1953) while they lived in Alexandria, VA. In 1954, Sandra and Jack moved to Albuquerque, where they had two more sons, Jack (1955), and Stevie (1957). They lived in Albuquerque until 1968. Sandra and Jack bought a guest ranch in Red River, NM in 1968, and moved there with their three sons in early 1969. Sandra and Jack divorced in 1969. Sandra did her best to raise her three teenage boys and maintain her sanity at the same time, and was also a surrogate mother to many of the other kids in Red River over the years she lived there. Sandra lived at Cottonbloom Assisted living since late July 2005. Her family thanks the staff of Cottonbloom and also the Las Cruces Nursing Center for the care and kindness they showed Sandra during her time at each facility. Sandra wished to be placed near the grave of her youngest son, Stevie, in San Cristobal, NM. A Memorial Service will be held at the Red River Community House on July 13, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. Friends of Sandy are encouraged to share their stories about her at the Service.
