LARRABEE -- Charles Benham Larrabee, 81, leading New Mexico Attorney and former member of the New Mexico Supreme Court, died March 29 at his home in Albuquerque. Larrabee was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on May 19, 1926, and lived in various Midwest and New England cities as his father rose through the ranks of the fledgling commercial airline industry. He graduated from the British School in Montevideo, Uruguay, with a Cambridge Certificate in 1945. Immediately following his graduation from high school, Larrabee enlisted in the Navy, finishing his Naval career in the Pacific on USS North Carolina (BB 55). Following WWII, Larrabee attended the University of Iowa and upon graduation, he married Patricia JoAnn Kaufman, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and they moved to Albuquqerque and he attended the University of New Mexico Law School, while his wife Patricia taught in the Albuquerque Public Schools. Upon graduation, Larrabee joined the firm of Rodey, Dickason, Sloan, Mims and Akin and began a distinguished career in Law, retiring from the firm in 1989. Following his retirement, he was appointed to the New Mexico Supreme Court by Governor Garrey Carruthers. Larrabee resigned from the Court, choosing not to endure the hardships of campaigning for a permanent seat. An avid flyer, Larrabee owned several private planes and was well known in the city's flying community. He and his wife Pat also traveled the world, reveling in the sites and history of the places they visited and providing travel opportunities for their children and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Pat, of the family home; Charles S. Larrabee, of Woburn, Mass.; daughter, Ann Schmidt, of Salt Lake City, UT; daughters in Albuquerque, Susan Larrabee and Julia Patten; and John Larrabee, of Phoenix, MD; and their families, which include eleven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. He is also survived by his sister, Maryanne Rader, of Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Memorial Service to be announced. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made in Larrabee's name to the University of New Mexico Law School or the Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia Foundation.
