HUMPHRIES -- Robert Humphries, of Lowell, MI. Bob loved his family and life in the great outdoors, where he enjoyed hunting, fishing and anything and everything to do with the natural world. He had a special affinity for horses, taking pride in having trained wild mustangs. Bob had a passion for shooting sports and coached competitive shooters, including the Lowell High School shooting team. He was a mentor and loved sharing his knowledge with anyone who showed the slightest interest in hunting. Bob loved dogs and had a special fondness for golden retrievers named Trump. He will certainly be remembered for his sense of humor and his deep, hardy laughter. His career as a wildlife biologist with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Division began on Harsen's Island. He focused on creating habitat for wildlife, and he worked at many of the major waterfowl areas in the state, having left his fingerprint on the future direction of wetlands management in Michigan. He retired from the DNR in 2003. Bob also retired from the Navy, having served as a commander in naval intelligence. Bob grew up in an air force family making his home in the United States and abroad. Michigan was his home for the last 35 years. He always greeted his friends with a smile and a warm handshake or hug. Bob died December 15, 2007. He will be deeply missed by his wife, Becky; daughter, Jenny at home; daughter, Michelle and Mark of Boston; son, Joel of Kalamazoo; mother, Dorothy Humphries and mother-in-law, Virginia Jack; siblings, Gail West and Carol Ann Thomas and siblings-n-law, Doy West, Charles Thomas, Mike and Nancy Huntley, Al and Marylyn Gibbs; and faithful dogs, Trump, Anna, Chip, and Kit. Memorial Services were Wednesday, December 19, 2008 at 1:30 p.m. at the First Congregational Church of Lowell, 865 Lincoln Lake, Rev. Roger LaWarre, officiating. Donations or contributions may be made in Bob's name for the Michigan State University Air and Smallbore Rifle Club Endowed Scholarship, 300 Spartan Way, East Lansing, MI 48824-1005
