GONZALES -- Bennie Gonzales, 87, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, NM went to be with the Lord on January 2, 2008. Mr. Gonzales was born on June 22, 1920 to Luciano R. and Odelia (Leyba) Gonzales of Waldo, NM. Mr. Gonzales will be remembered for being a patriot and man of service. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and returned to Albuquerque to serve as a Fireman with Albuquerque Fire Department for over 23 years. During this time he earned the nickname "Bulldog Pletchas." Mr. Gonzales' family will lovingly remember his quick wit, jokes and very jovial personality. He was a caregiver, member of Post 13, loved to jog, go hunting, and picking up aluminum cans. He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Judy; his parents, Luciano and Odelia Leyba; and siblings, Val Gonzales, Willie Gonzales, Porfiria Montoya, and Delfino Gonzales. Mr. Gonzales is survived by his daughter, Betty Jo "B.J." Martin and her husband, Alvin, Gloria Gutierrez, and Geri Lucero and her life partner, Michael Gonzales; grandchildren, Marie Martinez and her husband, Jose, Jacquie Ware and her husband, Sid, Cindy Trujillo and her husband, Chris, Mandy Romero and her husband, Derrick, Ernie Lucero and his wife Raquel, Greg Lucero and his wife, Antoinette; 15 great-grandchildren; sisters, Celina Alderrete and Marcella Chavez and her husband, Ted; other relatives Sylvia Montoya, Ronnie Gonzales, Jack Montoya; numerous nieces and nephews; and his good friend, Jim, and neighbor, Della Hernandez. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to his caregivers, Mandy Romero and Derricko Romero, Jr. A Viewing and Visitation will be held on Monday, January 7, 2008, from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Palm Chapel of Daniels Family Funeral Services 1100 Coal Avenue SE. Eulogies will be presented from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Visitation. The Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, January 8, at 10:00 a.m., also at the Palm Chapel of Daniels Family Funeral Services. Chaplain Jerome P. Rael of Albuquerque Fire Department will preside over the Services. Interment will follow at Sandia Memory Gardens, Albuquerque. Pallbearers will be Ernie Lucero, Derrick Romero, Jose Martinez, James Lucero, Alvin Martin, and Michael Gonzales. Honorary Pallbearers will be Albuquerque Fire Department.
