KAHLES -- Frank Kahles, 100, passed away on November 20, 2007. Mr. Kahles was born in the province of Banat, then part of Austro-Hungary in 1907. He became a Romanian citizen when Banat was ceded to Romania at the end of World War I. Frank immigrated to the United States in 1923 at the age of 16. He met his wife, Anna, on a return visit to Romania in 1930, where they were married on August 28th of that year in the Roman Catholic Church in the small town of Comlosch. They both returned to the United States four months later. The Kahleses made their home in the Rogers Park area of far-north Chicago, where they lived for 72 years. Frank was employed as a flat-janitor and invested in real estate. Frank and Anna joined the St. Huberter Social Club in 1938, which helped to preserve the culture of the German-Speaking citizens of Banat. They were active in supporting members of their group who were displaced by World War II and the ensuing takeover of the region by Communist regimes. The big event of the year was the Club's Kirchweih, which was an evening of feasting and dancing culminating in teenage couples parading the strauss of rosemary and ribbons in a coming-of-age ceremony. After retirement in 1972, the Kahleses moved to Skokie, IL, where they resided until they moved to Albuquerque in 2002. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Anna; daughter, Margaret Bowers and husband, Bill, of Albuquerque; granddaughter, Laurie Thompson and husband, Rogan; great-grandsons, Derek and Aidan Thompson of Albuquerque; grandson, Michael Bowers and wife, Yu-Ling Bowers; great-granddaughter, Marina Bowers of Seattle; and numerous nephews and nieces living in Germany and Romania.
