SLAVIN -- James J. Slavin (Jim), fondly referred to as "The Duke", passed away peacefully at home in his sleep on July 11, 2007. He was 83. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 52 years, Anna Marie Slavin, and grandson, Mark Ashby. Born April 22, 1924 in Des Moines, IA, Jim graduated from St. Thomas High School in Houston, TX in 1942. He then went on to receive his BA in Arts and Science from the University of Western Ontario in 1947. He was a teacher of Spanish and Literature at Assumption College in Windsor, Ontario, Canada and St. Thomas High School. It was in Houston that he met the love of his life, Anna Marie Helfrich where they married June 16, 1951. He pursued a career in finance taking him back to Des Moines, Houston, and Corpus Christi before landing in Albuquerque in 1953 with Allied Building Credit, Inc. In 1963 he joined Albuquerque Federal Savings and Loan where he enjoyed a 20 year career. After retiring from banking, he worked for the State of New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department. Jim will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him. He is survived by three daughters, Kitty Norris and husband, Terry of Albuquerque, Patcy Ashby and husband, Jimmy of Rio Rancho, and Peggy Slavin Chank of Bermuda Dunes, CA; four grandsons, George and wife, Jamie of Rio Rancho, Cody and fiancee, Ciara of Rio Rancho, Kyle of Bermuda Dunes, CA, and Scott and wife, Connie of Witchita, KS; two granddaughters, Kaley of Bermuda Dunes, CA and Terri Lynne and husband, Kirk of Melbourne, FL; five great-grandchildren, Brooke, Kylee, Aleksis, Philip, and Ava-Grace. Other survivors include brother, Jack Slavin and wife, Libby of New Braunfels, TX; sister, Mary Woods of Ennis, TX; brother-in-law, James Helfrich and wife, Barbara of Alleyton, TX; as well as 11 nieces and nephews. The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the wonderful people of Assisted Living Solutions and Vista Care Hospice for their loving and compassionate care of Jim. Their attention allowed him to enjoy his life to the fullest right to the very end. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated by longtime family friend, Rev. Arthur Roberts, CSB, in the chapel at Gate of Heaven Cemetery on Saturday, July 21, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. Interment alongside his wife will occur at the cemetery immediately following Mass. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Pius X High School, 5301 St. Joseph's Drive NW, Albuquerque, NM, in honor of Basilian Fathers.
