WOODS -- WILLIAM E. Chief Master Sergeant William E. Woods, U.S. Air Force (Ret.), passed away peacefully, Thursday, March 15, 2007. Bill at times was also affectionately known as "Woody" and while serving with the United States Air Force in Japan picked up the Japanese nickname "Kuma-san," which roughly translates to "Mr. Bear" - a found reflection to his size and stature. During almost thirty years of service to our nation, Bill performed a variety of duties, including being part of a highly select cadre of airmen hand-picked to fly perilous and dangerous special Security Service missions as one of the USAF signal reconnaissance "backenders." Bill served during the Korean War, Vietnam War, and throughout the Cold War. His final duties were as a First Sergeant, the Commander's principal advisor on all enlisted matters, for the 1550th Field Maintenance Squadron at Kirtland AFB. He had a keen enthusiasm for shooting trap, skeet and bird hunting. The mighty "Kuma-san" is survived by his devoted and wonderful wife of over 53 years, Kay; lovely daughter, Cheryl; sons, Bill, Mark, and David; and a growing legacy of 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Graveside Services will be held Friday, March 30, 2007, 2:30 p.m., at Santa Fe National Cemetery. French Mortuary 1111 University Blvd. NE (505) 843-6333 www.frenchmortuary.com
