GALLES -- H.L. Galles, Jr., 95, passed away March 19, 2007. A lifetime resident of Albuquerque, Mr. Galles was preceded in death by his loving wife of almost 70 years, Fern. He is survived by his children, Lee Galles, of Albuquerque, Judi Friday and husband Larry, of Taos, NM, Rick Galles and wife Tina of Albuquerque and Karen Mische and husband Lynd, of Overland Park, KS. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. At the time of his passing, Mr. Galles was Chairman of the Board of Galles Motor company, in business since 1908. In 1959, he was named President of the National Automobile Dealers Association, and was originator and Chairman of the Dealer Election Action Committee and was inducted into the U.S. Automotive Hall of Fame. He was instrumental in the creation of the "Monroney" sticker law for honest price disclosure and was named Dealer of the Year by Time Magazine. Herbert, or "Hickum," as he was known by friends and family, enjoyed a lifetime career of service to his family, his employees, his industry and his state. Mr. Galles was inducted into the New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame, and was a former President of the UNM Lobo Club. He was Chairman of the committee originally responsible for building the Albuquerque Sports Stadium, as well as Chairman of the Board of PNM and of the Bank of New Mexico. He was a member of the Ballut Abyad Shrine Club, the Royal Order of Jesters, St. John's Episcopal Cathedral and Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He was a 32nd Degree Mason. Past President of the Albuquerque Community Chest, Mr. Galles was also Past President of the Western Shrine Association and Kiwanis Association. He was awarded the Zimmerman award by UNM, and was a lifetime member of the UNM Boosters Club and the Varsity Letterman's Club. Mr. Galles' love of life was evidenced by his recovery from a recent stroke, his desire to continue working and his pride in attending Lobo home football games. There were no gray areas in Hickum's life - he never compromised character, honesty or a job well done. Respected by his competitors and manufacturers alike, in terms of character and serenity, he was remarkable in every sense of the word. He was a great man, and treated everyone he met with friendship and dignity. Rumor has it that Hickum met his wife, Fern, at a football game in 1934, after a rare win over the University of Arizona. He was truly loved by his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family and friends. Viewing and visitation will be held Wednesday, March 21, at Strong-Thorne Mortuary, 1100 Coal Ave. SE from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Services will be held Thursday, March 22, at St. John's Cathedral, 4th & Silver, at 10:30 a.m., with a private internment to follow. Pallbearers will include his grandsons, Herbert "Bo" Galles, Jamie Galles, Tim Galles and Steve Mische, as well as long-time employees Al Coleman and Joe Heine. Honorary pallbearers include John Bundrant, Sid Cutter, Sen. Pete V. Domenici, Dr. William O. Edwards, Joe Garcia, Jerry Geist, Dr. Thomas A. Hayes, Gov. Bruce King, Tom Lang, Ray Reese, Hon. Robert P. Scott, Bobby Unser and Neil Weaver.
