PICKENS -- Mary Ann McCollum Pickens died December 31, 2006 in Dallas, TX. Mary Ann was born in McCaully, TX on February 21, 1929 to Levi and Florence McCollum, and she liked to joke that this event single-handedly set off the Great Depression. She completed her undergraduate study at McMurry College in Abilene and her Masters study at the University of Texas in Austin, and she taught school in Texas and New Mexico for 40 years. Her numerous friends will remember her musical talent, her generosity with time and energy in the United Methodist church community, and her love of visiting and spending time with friends and family. Her family and her 54-year marriage to Dr. Jim Pickens were the center of her life, and she took some of her greatest pleasure in joining him in his capacity as a Methodist minister in the Northwest Texas/New Mexico conference to visit friends and parishioners as often as possible. Her family remembers her as a mother devoted to the pursuits and happiness of her children and the loving support of their families. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Jim Pickens; daughter, Larissa Pickens Carroll and husband, Steve Carroll; granddaughter, Chloe Carroll; son, James Pickens and wife, Laura Pickens; and grandchildren, Hunter and McKenzie Pickens. Services will be held Saturday, January 27, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church, Abilene, TX, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory St. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association (https://www.alz.org/Donate/EProcess1.asp) or Vista Care Hospice (http://www.vistacare.com/giving/foundation/index.php).
