SMITH -- Richard Noll Smith Sr., 89, of Alamogordo, NM passed away on December 31, 2006. In WWII he served as chief of communications for the 49th Fighter Control Squadron at Darwin in the Northern Territory of Australia, earning the Air Medal and Asiatic Pacific Medal. "Dick" Smith helped establish the Solo Club for single people in Albuquerque in 1963. And he was involved in the defeat of property-holder liens for flood control funding in Albuquerque, proposing instead the vote for bonds that provided this critical construction. He remained a political activist for many years in his "retirement." Richard was preceded in death by his brothers, Alex, Edmund, and William; and his sister, Mary. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Dorothy Smith; his brothers, Fred and James Smith; son, Richard Jr.; daughters, Donna Curtis and Diana Smith - children from his first marriage to Gladys Cox; step-son, Douglas Yates and his wife, Rose-Marie, Karen Yates, Arthur Yates; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and three step-grandsons. At his request, no funeral services will be held, and cremation has taken place under the direction of Alamogordo Funeral Home. Please visit online register at www.alamogordofuneralhome.org.
