HAWKINS -- CHARLES HAWKINS 1923 - 2006 Charles Hawkins, a resident of Los Ojos, NM and a former resident of Albuquerque, passed away Wednesday, December 27, 2006. He was 83. Born September 18, 1923 near Hassell, NM, Charles graduated from House High School, where he excelled in football, basketball, and track (once holding state records in the 110-yard high and low hurdles). Following graduation he served in Gen. George Patton's Army tank corps in Germany. Wounded on three different occasions, he was presented a Purple Heart and two bronze oakleaf clusters. In 1947, he married Freta MacWilliams and moved to Clovis where he was employed as a State Livestock Inspector as well as a motorcycle policeman. Later chosen as a member of the New Mexico State Police force, he spent a 28-year career in uniform, being stationed in Clovis, Fort Sumner, Santa Fe, and Albuquerque. He eventually was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and taught marksmanship at the State Police Academy. Charles retired near Chama in the late '70s, keeping busy with snowmobiling, wood-chopping, TV sports, and hiring out on small projects in the area. He also served as a Sergeant-at-Arms for several sessions of the New Mexico State Legislature, and attended most of the annual State Police reunions. Charles is survived by his widow, Freta; sons, David (and wife, Karin) of Veguita; Bill (and mate, Peggy Scott) of Los Lunas; and Leldon (and wife, Doris) of Farmington, NM; eight grandchildren including Melissa Leyba (and husband, Julian) of Taylor Ranch; Sheena Hawkins (and mate, Travis Jones) of Rio Rancho; and Jessie Hawkins of Albuquerque; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, and sister. A Memorial Service and military salute is scheduled at the Veterans National Cemetery in Santa Fe Friday, January 5, 2007 at 1 p.m. Condolences may be sent c/o 29 Racca Rd., Los Lunas, NM 87031.
