Born into a farming community, Helen studied nursing and on December 29, 1943 joined the Army Nurse Corps. As a 1st Lieutenant, she did overseas duty on the US Army Hospital Ship, Marigold. While raising four sons, she continued to work as a registered nurse both at the Veterans Administrative Hospital and later at Ridgecrest Manor. Upon her husband's death in 1989, she took over responsibility for the Will Shuster estate. Over the following years, she did much volunteer work and was a patron of the arts. Helen is survived by three sons, Tom, Paul and Mark; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Don B. Shuster and her eldest son, Don.
