WINTERS -- Leonard Orval Winters, born to Leonard O. and Lula Winters in Perry, OK on March 16, 1920, made his transition on October 23, 2006. Leonard was preceded in death by his wife Virginia, "Ginny" in 2003, and his son, George Michael Winters in 2004. He is survived by his daughter, Mary Winters Morse and husband, Ted of Placitas, NM; by his grandson, George Michael "Mike" Winters, wife, Julie and great-granddaughter, Mikayla Sue of Murfreesboro, TN; and by his daughter in-law, Veronica Winters Bergquist of Wichita, KS. He also has two step-granddaughters, Coco Morse Ballew and husband, Will of Missoula, MT and Catherine Morse Fox and husband, Tim of Rancho Santa Fe, CA; and five step-great-grandchildren: William and Anna Ballew; and Ella, Sophia, and Anaclaire Fox. Leonard graduated from Perry High School and Oklahoma State University studying Fire Science. He was Assistant Fire Chief in Perry, OK where his father, Leonard O. Winters Sr. was Fire Chief. He served his country in the U.S. Army in World War II and again in Korea. He and Virginia and their family moved to Albuquerque in 1963. Leonard was known for his ability to "fix anything and everything" and for his sense of humor. After retirement he and Ginny lived their dream by moving to San Diego and buying a sailboat. After moving back to Perry to care for Virginia's mother, they spent many happy years in south Texas in their fifth-wheeler at Lakeview Park in Weslaco. Many, many thanks to the incredible, loving, and caring staff of Care Free Living and to the wonderful and supportive staff of Ambercare Hospice. Cremation has taken place; Leonard and Virginia's ashes will be mixed and spread in the ocean as they requested. A Memorial will be held at Care Free Living, 10916 Juan Tabo Place, NE, at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday October 29, 2006.
