WILSON -- Winona Katherine Wilson, age 79, ended her journey on earth on August 28, 2006 in Minneapolis MN. She died peacefully following a long battle with diabetes and Muscular Dystrophy. Winona joins her father, Reverend George Wilson; mother, Maggie Howard Wilson; brother, George Wilson Junior; and sister, Lonah Wilson Haury. She is survived by her brother, Richard Wilson, of Golden, CO; and her sister, Margery Walker, of San Saba, TX. A full blooded American Indian of Dakota and Navajo descent, Winona was born on the Navajo Reservation in 1927 at Rehoboth Mission Hospital near Gallup, NM. Winona inherited considerable musical talent from both parents, but her gifts were not limited to music alone. She was a gifted artist specializing in beadwork in the Dakota and Lakota traditions, and especially skilled in working with the very smallest beads possible. She had a passionate love for Indian people of all tribes, and was most proud of her involvement with the American Indian Community. She taught crafts and story telling classes to children, and served on many boards including the Peace Maker Center of the American Indian Movement, the National Heritage Foundation in Washington, D.C., the Pillsbury United Social Services Executive Board of Minneapolis. For many, however, her most outstanding gift was her spontaneous generosity and her willingness to share anything she had with her friends. Although wheelchair bound, she was a symbol of love, concern, and energy in her community. Winona requested cremation, and she has asked that her ashes be scattered from the peak of the Sandia Mountains. A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, September 28, 2006 at the Eastern Hills Baptist Church.
